The rare wines of the Vega Sicilia winery reach their peak after decades – if you can get them. Stan Sesser seeks out one of the most highly regarded – and unusual – wines on the planet. There’s no sign at the Vega Sicilia winery and no tasting room. Waving a wad of money to buy a bottle of wine will do you no good; nothing at the winery is for sale. Of its two top labels, called Unico and Unico Especial, the first is released only after aging for at least a decade in barrels and the second is a blend of grapes harvested in three different years, a rarity in the world of red wine, so the bottle doesn’t have a vintage date on it.

Antonio Banderas is known to millions as a star of stage and screen, but few people know that he is now a partner in Ribera del Duero’s Bodegas Anta Banderas. Wine Enthusiast recently caught up with him just after shooting wrapped on Woody Allen’s latest movie in London.

Wine Enthusiast: When did you decide to make wine?
Antonio Banderas: I became interested in making wine years ago. I had been looking for years for a winery that was passionate about making wine. Creating art is important to me. Making wine is creating art. I get enormous pleasure watching grapes grow and mature. I have a passion for growing grapes and making wine. It is hard to explain in words—but I can say this—it is a feeling that I have in my heart.

WE: Why did you choose the region of Ribera del Duero to make wine?
AB: Ribera del Duero has good winemakers. They have always had good winemakers. They have romantic ideas about wine. This is very important to me.

I was dining at Sabroso Latin World Cuisine in Rhinebeck, N.Y., a fun little Hudson Valley town with a burgeoning foodie culture. I was taking care of my jones for Spanish food with some grilled shrimp and chorizo to start, followed by a very solid paella. Nancy and I used to adore Alejandro Fernandez’s Pesquera bottlings, but it’s been a few years since we added any to our cellar as we found the wine wandering down a progressively rustic streak. Still, we decided to take a trip down memory lane.

When most people think of Spanish wine, Rioja comes to mind. But don’t write off Ribera del Duero, which is producing earthy wines with great minerality at very reasonable prices. The main grape in Ribera de Duero is Tempranillo, just as in Rioja. Except that, in Ribera, they call it Tinto Fino or Tinta del Pais. The region’s higher altitude — vineyards, some of the highest in Europe, are planted between 2,500 and 2,800 feet above sea level — results in wines that are not quite as big as those from Rioja, but all the more interesting. Light to medium-bodied reds express earth, clay, and spice, but also bright red fruit. At the 16th annual Great Match, a grand-scale wine-and-tapas pairing held yesterday at the Metropolitan Pavilion, several wines from the region stood out.
