Dehesa de los Canónigos, one of those simple buildings of rural style, stands on the Duero river banks, close to Pesquera. The appearance of the building reminds that it has served as a farm for a long time and wine’s significance over time has varied depending on the social and economic context. The facilities, which are over 150 years old and fully restored, still support majestic beams and thick adobe walls, an excellent insulation system to maintain ideal temperatures for winemaking and ageing. The winery, founded in 1988, consists of a set of small buildings surrrounding a country house that still serves as a residence for Luis Sanz, the current owner, and his relatives. The white-washed walls, the low buildings and the U-shaped architectural structure give the buildings a Basque air rather than Castilian, as if it were an old estate with a grand history. However, the distinctive landscape speaks for itself: behind the cellar-home there is a leafy forest of Mediterranean pines that spreads out to the banks of the Duero River whose banks marks the estate’s limits. The distinctive riverside vineyard stretches along the front, partly on a flat area and partly perched on the mountains. Today, the vineyard is Dehesa de los Canónigos’ reason for being and wine is its most important activity.

Tasting Note Reserva 2001. Morello cherry red with a good depth. Elegant nose, intense primary aromas of soft fruits well offset by spicy notes of weathered wood characteristic of a rigorous aging in American oak which nonetheless do not overshadow the fruit character. Powerful mouth, fleshy, very luscious, rich and silky, with lovely tannin structure and acidity. Intense in retro-olfaction, with fruity aromas, balsamic, liquorice, coffee etc. The pleasant flavours of the aftertaste are particularly noted on the finish as sensations are still intense and invite immediate drinking. Production 26,000 bottles of 0.75 l Varieties 85% Tinto fino, 12% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Albillo. Barrelled-fermentation period 24 months in American oak barr
