There is written evidence that the first vines were planted on this amazing estate in the 13th Century. During the 14th Century, it was run by Saint Pedro de Villacreces and, later on, with its perfect conditions for prayer and retreat, it became a monastery. In the 20th Century, the property belonged to a wealthy aristocratic family from Valladolid, who used to spend their holidays and weekends there. In the early 1970s, 100 acres of vineyard were planted, which has now been increased to 150. Including a 200-year-old forest, the estate comprises a total of 285 acres. Grupo Artevino bought Finca Villacreces in 2003 and a great investment in refurbishing both the facility and vineyards took place. Located next to the mythic Vega Sicilia and surrounded by the Duero River, it is an incredible spot boasting the best soil for the growth of vines. The altitude is 2,300 feet above sea level and the climate continental, with extreme temperatures. In addition to the climate, poor soil comprised of lime, gravel, sand and quartz give us exceptional quality grapes to make Finca Villacreces. The main varietal grown on the property is Tempranillo, although we also have Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and an area for experimental varieties. The yield is very low, around 1.6 tons per acre, which guarantees the quality of our wines. This, together with the blend of different soils, gives our wines a very specific character.

Tasting Notes

The wine has been produced with the grapes coming from our 60 hectares of vineyards in our state by the banks of the Duero river. The blending combines 90% of Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) and 10% of Cabernet Sauvignon . The yields were particularly low for this 2005 vintage, less than 3000 kg/hectare. Deep purple colour. Complex nose, with intense aromas of mocha, graphite, wild cranberries and cassis. In the mouth it displays a meaty structure, with plenty of spicy dark berries, a good balance and an amazingly long finish. The tannins are well integrated, though will be better in 4-6 years. Drink up to 2027.

Tasting Notes

This single vineyard wine comes from a tiny piece of land (1,2 hectares) with some of the oldest vines in Ribera del Duero (more than 80 years of age). The yields are almost ridiculous (1900 kg in total), something that explains the singularity and limited availability. Deep purple colour. Complex nose, with intense aromas of toffee, graphite, pencil lead, blackberries, wild cranberries, cassis and a hint of iodine. In the mouth it displays an elegantly meaty structure, with plenty of spicy dark berries, a good balance and an amazingly long finish.
